i think i can answer your question about why u can't use blogskin's skins.
first, go to template. then go to 'edit HTML'. scroll to the very bottom and you'll see a 'Revert to Classic Template'. click it, and paste your downloaded blogskin skin into it. and hit 'save template changes'.
